How To Clean a Beauty Blender After Use

Updated on 3rd November 2021 by Asma

One of the most recent, yet most effective beauty trends is using a makeup sponge, also known as a beauty blender. But, as with makeup brushes, sponges need cleaning too.

It can be difficult to know exactly how to clean your beauty blender after every use, but the process is actually quite easy, and something that should be done regularly.

So, with that in mind, I have put together an easy-to-follow tutorial on how to clean a beauty blender in five easy steps. So get out there and wet your sponge! You deserve it!

Cleaning Your Beauty Blender

It’s important to clean your beauty blender after everyday use so it will last longer. You can put it in a container and take it to the sink and wash it with soap and hot water. You can also sharpen the edges on your sponge by running your thumb or finger along its edge while holding it at an angle up to the light.

If you want to cleanse it on a regular basis, then make sure you are using mild soap or moisturizer on your skin when you are doing this. Rubbing the sponge against areas that have makeup or lotion may be too harsh of a technique, so make sure you’re cleaning it right. A lot of people use baby wipes to clean their beauty blender but these wipes aren’t always gentle enough for cleaning brushes, sponges, and other makeup applicators.

Never soak your beauty blender in water, because this will ruin the texture of the product. The sponge should be allowed to gently dry out after each use before it is stored.

If you’re serious about using your beauty blender for applying makeup, make sure all the makeup products are removed from it before storing it carefully in an appropriate container or jar. You’ll feel more comfortable knowing your sponge won’t take on any stains or odours if you store it properly between uses.

How To Clean a Beauty Blender: Step By Step

Step 1: Soak In Hot Water & Mild Detergent

Start with getting your beauty blender nice and hot with water. This will help when you rub the makeup off of it when you soak it in the next step. Next use a mild dish soap or special makeup removing solution that is designed for sponges and normal household items in order to get your sponge nice and clean. Then remove the soap and hair by placing your sponge in the middle of a towel and rubbing it on the outside of the towel.

Step 2: Getting Rid Of Excess Makeup

Use mild dish soap or makeup remover to rub it on your beauty blender to get all of that excess makeup out. Make sure that you are not using anything with alcohol in it, as this can dissolve away your beauty blender by destroying its material makeup. If you do not have any soft cleaning solution, just use hot water to scrub down your sponge until all of the makeup is removed.

Step 3: Rinse It Out

Use cold water to rinse your sponge and get off all that excess makeup remover or soap that you may have applied to the sponge. This will help close the pores of the sponge and help kill any bacteria that may be on your beauty blender.

Step 4: Let It Dry

Let your beauty blender dry out on a towel, countertop, or bath rack so it can get back to its original size and sponginess. Let it dry naturally, do not use a heat source to dry it out faster.

Step 5: Store In Its Original Container

Place your beauty blender back into its original container when it is fully dried. Make sure that you store it in a place where there is no moisture or where there is a lot of sunlight so that it can keep in shape and keep in its original form.

How To Wash Beauty Blender Jars/Containers

So know you know you to wash and clean the sponge, let’s discuss how to cleanse the container that your sponges live in.

  1. Start by wetting a cotton pad with warm water and gently patting it over the insides of the blender cup until all visible makeup particles are soaked up.
  2. Add a few drops of EcoTools Make Up Brush Shampoo then swirl it around your beauty blender jar. You can also substitute this with different liquids that work for you. (I do not advise you to use too many exfoliants as this will dry out the makeup sponge. Better to stick to a few drops of cleanser or a slurpee at most.)
  3. Next, use an old toothbrush and clean off any remaining makeup particles from your blender cup. It is important to remove any particles from your blender because they can cake up and cause breakouts. If this happens, you will need to replace your sponge which is not a cheap or easy process.
  4. You can now use a dry cotton pad and wipe out the cleanser residue left in the sponge cup. When using a dry cotton pad, be sure to squeeze out any excess water so that you do not let it drip into the blender cup and loosen up the makeup which was just cleaned off. Wipe out the sides of the blender cup until it is completely dried out.
  5. Squeeze out any excess water and you can let your blender fully air dry.

The Final Word

It is safe to clean your makeup sponge with various makeup products and water. However, when using makeup products on the blender, make sure that you are using gentle products that contain no harsh chemicals or solvents that’ll cause the sponge to crack or become too dry. Following the steps set out above and with the recommended products, your makeup sponges will stay hygienic and last you much longer than expected.
